A Weekend in Mendocino

Every now and then you get a moment to just press the pause button on life and soak up the moment you're in. Cody and I got to do just that last weekend for our sixth wedding anniversary in Mendocino! I've been that broken record (that won't shut-up) about wanting to explore the area for years now. Cody heard my cry. And he answered with a beautiful, unforgettable, and amazing weekend! My mom and sister-in-law quickly jumped at the chance to have Luke all to themselves. Two nights away from Luke was a little shock to my system, but they're both already asking when we are leaving again!

It really is just as gorgeous as you've dreamed. Redwoods, crystal clear waters, cliff-side beaches and sandy beaches, scrumptious coffee shops and bakeries, fresh seafood and cozy accommodations.  We stayed at the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek in the tiny town of Little River. They have a variety of room and cottage sizes depending on the space you need, very sweet place to stay! We drove around quite a bit planning the next trip (while still enjoying the one we were on!), most likely the next visit up there will be camping. But we also would like to stay at the Searock Inn and Stanford Inn based on their location and views. That's how you know you love a place though right? When you immediately miss it even though you haven't left yet!

We also drove up to Ft. Bragg (about 10 miles north) and loved exploring Glass Beach and the surrounding beaches. Most of the glass at glass beach has been worn down to actual sand and (more than likely) collected by visitors but it was still fun to comb through the pebbles. Beautiful views, cliffs and tide pools to climb around on. Most of the coast here is open to explore as you please. Love that!

Based on my perception, there are four state parks within ten miles of highway (everything is off highway 1), but I am never 'map accurate', so just know that there are four state parks like really close together up there. Two have camping, Russian Gulch & Van Damme, and the other two are great for hiking, viewing, photographing, biking, you get it.. Since we are tent campers, either Russian Gulch or Van Damme would suit us, but if you have a trailer of any sort, Van Damme is your better bet as the sites and inner roads are a little more spacious.

We splurged on a fancy schmancy dinner Saturday night at The Albion River Inn for our anniversary. The most amazing dinner I've ever had. Really. Seriously. Have you ever eaten your fill of shrimp, crab, halibut and salmon? I can now say I have! The waiter even passed my husbands straw test. Every time we go out to eat, he orders a soda, but he plunks the straw in my drink because he doesn't like drinking through a straw. He's been waiting for years for a waiter to notice and not place a straw in his drink on the refill. So if you're out there, thank you Mr. Waiter for noticing. It put the cherry on top of your already stellar service!

I highly, highly recommend checking this place out! Even during peak season (July & August) it was not hardly crowded! I mean I think for the locals it was probably swamped, but being from the Bay Area it was like we had the place to ourselves! I'm probably leaving a million tips and details out, but my brain is too scattered right now to list them in any sort of helpful order. Can't wait to go back and add to the memories!

Road-Trip Wrap-Up

36 days
2,693 miles
4 new states visited (NV, UT, AZ & CO)
8 times Cody wished aloud for his dirtbike
78 times Cody thought about having his dirtbike (ok so this isn't 'confirmed' but I'm sure I'm right!)
4 books read (in 2 weeks! Sydney Sheldon....)
1 bad sunburn = countless bad tanlines
2 new motors
1 new radiator
4 boxers (Boo, Daisy, Doc & Tanner)
2 cats (Alex & Ariel/Rapunzel--name changes daily!)
$3.17= lowest gas price (in Payson, Az)
1 game of rummy won
7 games of rummy lost
1 campfire (teeny tiny, just to say we did it!)
106 ' F average temperature
1 transmission (to come)

And in case you haven't seen it, here's the 'mobile home' Cody created for the trip.

Cody built a platform to sit atop the wheel wells giving us an elevated area for sleeping and storage underneath. When we set up camp for the night, all we needed to do was pull off the boxes you see above, as well as our clothes bags, and our bed was ready to go! Easiest camping set up ever. Tanner had full reign of the backseat while driving and also slept there...except for the nights when we had thunderstorms and used the backseat for the cooler & other boxes. He sincerely appreciated it.

Above is a close-up of just one of Cody's genius ideas. We Cody arranged the underbed storage based on what we would need most often. For example, his hair-cutting kit was put far back because he only needs to use it every two weeks or so. But it's relatively small and neither of us wanted to belly crawl our way in there to get ahold of it. Sooo he attached strings & labeled them so you could just pull the string to get what you needed! Brilliant!

And just in case you want more trip talk...here's more...

Ha! That'd be a good Srabble or Wheel of Fortune word!
It *only* took me 3 tries to get a picture of this sign (took this standing still on top of Hoover Dam, as opposed to the two failed attempts while Cody was driving)!

Got Arizona & Utah on the first try! Ohhhh yyyeaaahhhh! (Since we flew to CO, I didn't get to take a pic of the state border sign...bum...)
Sidenote: my $2 flea market bangles held up. Although the color totally bled out (not on my skin thankfully) and now they're all silver. Oh well! I'm still good with that!
So talk about cooperation here. These horses were swatting flies off eachother. Pat your back and you pat mine! Maybe all horses do this? First time I've seen it, and I thought it was pretty cool!
The desert. Yes, I took this while Cody was drivin' down the highway. Kinda like it though.
Umm,  how cool is this tree? I mean it has a seat ready & waiting! All you need is a good book! Or maybe binoculars since this was at the Grand Canyon after all.
Some clouds. I swear clouds are a purer white outside of Cali. Or maybe long hours on the road plays tricks on your mind....
The town of Happy Jack, Arizona: gas station, restaurant, post office (that little shed in the middle), real estate office and car mechanic all thisclose together! Talk about a small town! Kinda jealous though, gotta admit...
FEEEEED MEEE!!! At our first campsite in Happy Jack we got to watch (& listen to!) a young family of birdies get fed like 8 million times a day. Kind of cool, kind of annoying.
Yep, that says $3.18/gallon. Payson, Arizona. Cute town! Cheap gas! What more could you ask for?
Ok so as barren and 'dead' as the desert is...it's mysteriously beautiful!!!
This is the slap-you-in-the-face image for how bad our first motor was...
Ashley took us to The Olive Bar, she is a fellow olive-lover by the way. Unfortunately they decided to capitalize on their coolness and dedicate a good portion of their shop to a 'more than I wanted to pay' restaurant instead of the tasting room they started out as. But that's ok! They had some pretty cool combos and I grabbed a cool (free) recipe card for grilled corn on the cob--I will post about that later....
This little chickadee loves to have her hair in her face. She took full advantage of this windows down on the freeway situation.
And he says he hates cats....
The inside of the card says, " If you have the thyme, let's get together!" How cute is that? Ok, so a little corny...but I would fall for it!
So the trio here got themselves barracaded in here for multiple reasons. Lucky for them its too hot in Arizona to simply boot the dogs outside.
Boo was such a motherly figure to Ariel/Rapunzel (her name changes daily). Seriously though, she took great care to guard her from Tanner while he learned to be nice to kitties. Ok so he didn't totally learn to be nice, but he made progress!
Since Kyle & Ashley were SO amazing in aiding us with our truck problems (place to stay & resident mechanic?! yeah they're THAT awesome!) we got the oppurtunity to hang out with their cutie-pa-tootie. We wore her out, apparently...

So in an effort to not be a complete bum, I made dinners forKyle & Ashley while we were stranded at their cute home! By the way, she had some AMAZING recipes! Don't worry, I copied them down and will post with pics! Above I'm browning pork for Chili Verde. Soooo good!
And this is one of the many blue bellies Cody caught in various locations on our trip. Kind of cute, huh?

So that's that. Back to real life....

A little more SoCal Please!

Got a great tour  of Long Beach from Chris & Phyllis (FYI it's not nearly as ghetto as Snoop Dog thinks..I didn't even see any ghetto!). We visited some great little hole in the wall restaurants. There'yre more like snack shacks built in front of the owner's homes. If you're ever in town stop at MVP's for sandwiches and 4th Street Mexican.
In between eating, we drove into downtown and got up close & personal to the Queen Mary.
(painted dolphins)
(a wooden airplane commissioned by Walt Disney is was housed in here!)
(2nd largest mural, 1st largest is painted on the roof!)
Then we went up to Signal Hill to look out all over the valley. By the way Chris needs to buy a double-decker bus, he has allll the facts down about this area!
After that we took Tanner to a dog beach in Huntington. It was so nice to be on the beach again! As beautiful as everything else we visited was, nothing beats the beach! It was (almost) like coming home!! Tanner definately enjoyed himself too.
After  our fun in the sun with our highschool buddies, it was off to pay the grandparents a visit! We got the grand tour of their new-ish home and all of the fabulous updates they made to it!  Swimming, a tour of Tustin (an ADORABLE town, by the way...) more BBQ (which if you're like us, you never tire of!) and Pawnstars. Yes, it was a great visit! So I did take a group photo, but I promised her (grandma) that I wouldn't put it online because it was after we had gone swimming and you know what that does to the hair! Oh and a little side note here, so when we were younger she would pay us each $5 to smile for a family photo. Yeah. GENIUS!! She has some great, old family photos because of it. I am SO doing that whenever I get to be a Grandma.
So this is another cool thing: my grandparents are very patriotic. And they keep 4th of July-esque decor up from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Love it! Copying that too!

On a lower note...we left Tustin to make a slow trek up the coast. Buuuttt by the time we got to Ventura (about 2 hours away) we started to hear another funky noise from under the hood. So we got a campsite for the night and hoped & prayed the truck would still start in the morning so we could make back to our temporary home in Santa Cruz.  But first we spent our last evening  relaxing & laughing as much as possible to conclude our trip!

We started a marathon game of rummy (first to 1000!) but it became a very intricate round, and we only made it to 300!!
Our  slug-bug was pretty worn out from the fun weekend, he tried to fight it, but eventually drifted off to sleep!

And we made it home! :) But stopped at the beach on the way (suprise, suprise...) for some more frolicking in the surf. Ok so Cody doesn't frolick....but Tanner definately does!
Now for that transmision work....happy, happy, joy, joy!
