Shared Nursery Plans

In case you haven't heard, our second little lovebug is a BOY! I'm going to be seriously out-manned here at home, but I am very excited to train up two loving momma's boys! Haha! My aunt was so sweet to quickly tell me I have retained my status as Queen of the House. Love that thought! Cody is of course elated (although he was softening to the idea of having a daugher!) and he is especially looking forward to more football, dirtbikes, and just plain dirt.

We are planning to remodel our bedroom (add insulation, replace window, revamp closet organization, new ceiling fan, etc.) and give it to the boys. Its about two feet wider and with cribs, toys, and everything else these little bodies require it will help tremendously!! Luke's room now is all re-done, so we'll end up with a remodeled room ourselves! Woo hoo! Now that I am 24 weeks, the anxiousness is setting in to start demo and get going in there. We all still love the colors and furniture in Luke's current room, so I'll just be adding to it for the boys room, or as I am calling it The Jr. Man Cave!

Things that are catching my eye...

I also have a few things I never got to for Luke's room that I want to make sure to do this time around. Primarily, framing Cody's All-Star football jersey and doing some large prints of Cody and both Grandpa's on dirtbike adventures. And with that I'll end with "Braaaaaap" ;)

Another Pair of Genes!

I'm going to go ahead and blame first trimester struggles for my blogging absence! In July we will welcome another pair of genes! We are so excited to see who this little one will be!!!

In a few weeks we can find out if we are welcoming a boy or girl, can't wait!! I'm anxious and excited to see how I will adapt Luke's current room furnishings and colors. We are planning to switch our two bedrooms around since ours is about two feet larger. The little extra space will give us room for two cribs and toys and clothes and younameit. Which means we need to get to work insulating, replacing the window and painting that room!

Favorite Things For Baby (Part II)

Man those babies change a lot in one year! My last list included items for the first six months of life, and most of those items I loved don't even apply anymore, so I wanted to pick up where I left off and highlight the things I loved for 6 months +! (A few obvious items we are still using and loving: Diaper Genie, Changing Pad and Music & Books.)

Bath Seat: I had to order this via Amazon from Israel, because (let me get on my soapbox here) apparently American parents can't be trusted to use this item safely. That said, if you can manage to sit on the bathroom floor and watch your child while they're in the bath, I highly recommend this seat. Its the same style I have a gazillion bath pictures of myself as a baby in. I tried using the Bumbo in the bath, but had a tendency to float and soak up water.

Sippy Cups: Still searching for the unicorn on this product. Literally every single one says it doesn't leak. Literally every single one I've tried does leak. If you find the magical non-leaking sippy cup, I would LOVE to know.

Immersion Blender: Something many people have already, I didn't, but I loved using it while making food for Luke. Luke was able to eat most of the foods I cook already, but I really really appreciated and was inspired by the recipes and overall organization of this book, The Baby & Toddler Cookbook.  The toddler recipes are even great for myself and Cody. Easy, yummy, and with hidden nutrition.

(Side-note: we only just recently had to upgrade to a chair mounted booster seat! No bulky highchairs needed!)

Squeeze Pouch Foods: I know that's probably not the official name, but all you mommas know exactly what I'm talking about! These are the perfect on-the-go (or tired days) meals! There are so many options and blends, from yogurt & fruit to vegetables & fruit all the way to grains & you name it! Check out the regular snack aisle instead of the baby food section for comparable and more budget friendly options.

Teething: I had a few options for teething toys and every time a new tooth was coming, Luke liked different things. Our rotation included the standard cool gel teething rings, gum massager/vibrating teether,  teether ball and just a simple wet, knubby washcloth.

Nightlight: Our doctor suggested this as a way to help Luke self-soothe himself at night. For me, and many adults, pitch black is the way to sleep. But for babies, this isn't always the case. We've all had that feeling where you suddenly wake and it takes a second to figure out where you are. Just a glimmer of light will reveal the familiar outlines and shadows from the crib point of view. Worked wonders for us!

And the rest of the baby stuff...well its awfully fun, entertaining and exciting but at the end of the day, Luke loves his tupperware just as much as the musical whatamacallits!

My Favorite Things for Baby

Luke is growing so fast its blowing me away! I can't believe we're in the second half of his first year! I'm not sure how well I've succeeded but my original goal was to have a balance in our baby products. Enough that I would have plenty of options and help with the day-to-day but also not so much that my home looked like Babies R Us! I find that I feel more relaxed in a more minimalist home environment, and I am working on creating a simpler home. Or just a whole lot LESS STUFF. I still definitely embrace a more traditional and eclectic home but just with less clutter. I wouldn't say I'm a minimalist parent however, we have a lot of toys and clothes for Luke. Our family and friends have been SO gracious and giving its really seriously mind blowing. We've hardly bought a thing ourselves for Luke! I haven't even bought a single diaper for him yet! Although he's been overflowing his current ones, so this week I'll be buying my first pack of diapers after 7 months (size 5!!)!

I thought I would compile a list of the baby products I really enjoyed having for Luke's first six months. Some of these can continue to work longer depending on how quickly your baby grows. Luke grew out of a few things that still would have been great if he wasn't too big for them! I hesitate to call this a list of  needs  because really your sweet baby only needs you! At the end of it all, he has just as much fun chewing/sucking on my sleeve as he does any other available toy, so these are just products we enjoyed!

Changing table pad. I can't remember if its from Target or Babies R Us but, this $20 purchase converted a standard dresser to a changing table. I really appreciate the lips on the sides, its an extra challenge for Luke to be able to roll off and out of it while being changed! Although, he's gotten so tall already that he just fits the 32" length so I am not sure how much longer we will be able to use it!

(Full nursery photos here)

Diaper Genie. Yes, its wonderful. Any trashcan with a self sealing lid will do. So feel free to shop around on this one! Although trash cans get expensive, like fast. Never understood that.

Infant Lounger & Boppy Pillows. I noticed a big difference in the quality of his nap-times (longer, less fussy, fell asleep faster!) when I used these to prop Luke up more to sleep. Especially during a few bouts of hating nap-time and also when he had a stuffy nose. The contours of the pillows cradle him (and fit the cradle even!) so its literally like lounging in a recliner. Personally, I don't enjoy sleeping flat on my back, so why would a baby?

Stroller/Carseat System. The ease of clicking his carseat directly onto the stroller is invaluable! We went with a Graco model because we liked the hardware on the wheels best, also the wheels were rubber and not entirely plastic. This is one of those items you should definitely visit in stores instead of soley relying on the internet.

Bouncy/Vibration Lounger. He got over this idea/grew too large for this pretty quickly. But it was really great while it lasted! Luke wasn't much for swings, although he enjoyed the upright baby swing when he was around 4-5 months with our nanny.

Bumbo Seat. Really seriously loved this thing. It fits anywhere and we used it everywhere. If he hadn't grown out of it so quickly I would have continued using it as a highchair alternative!

Highchair. Instead of a floor model, we have been solely using a table attachment. At first, he was a bit wobbly in it, a rolled up blanket helped fill up the space though. Now he's stronger and also more used to the idea of being in it so its worked great for us. Major space saver to use this instead of a floor model!

Mesh Food Feeder. I'm pretty certain this is my favorite thing. We'll thankfully be able to still use it for a while too! I do mostly frozen foods in here (I puree foods and freeze in ice-cube trays). Stuffing a frozen cube of squash in here while we eat dinner has been a fun way to all eat together. And I love the idea of him getting to practice feeding himself and seeing his excitement as he got the hang of it! They were also wonderful for our recent heat wave. I have learned to make small ice-cubes so they fit more easily into the opening of the mesh.

Playmats. We have two options here, one is a large rectangle that we are still using. It has rings, varied fabric prints and crunchy elephant ear flaps. Luke still enjoys army crawling on and off of this one. The other one he grew out of was smaller but had an upright four key piano like feature that he could kick while playing with a mobile above his head (while laying on his back). This was really entertaining for all of us. He'd manage to grab a toy, get excited, kick the piano, hear the song, get really excited, kick again, etc. We used this a lot in the evening when the sun-down syndrome started to hit. You know the its too early for bed, not enough time for a nap though, happy to sad in an instant time.

Exersaucer. I've been calling this the jumpy seat, but I guess that's a slightly different product. Luke LOVES this thing. He jumps, he picks up his feet and hangs, spins the tumblers, spins himself around... Endless entertainment here. Ours is adjustable in height, so we should be able to continue using this one for a while still!

Music & Books. Singing, reading, listening...this is when I feel the most bonded with Luke. He reacts so strongly to us reading a story, Cody playing guitar, or even him trying to get in on our conversations. So many times, I have to find a chewy toy so Cody and I can talk, he really gets going on the vocals when we're talking, he just wants to be in on it so badly! But he gets so loud sometimes we have to sit and wait for him to take a breath to continue our conversation! We also somehow became reliant on singing the ABCs a quick happy pill and it totally works! I think it came to be on of those sleep deprived days when I couldn't remember the words to any other songs.

Every now and then Luke looks at the pictures too instead of just chewing on the books. On the left is Luke at Christms, the right one is from last week! He's losing his tan skin and dark hair! So far I think the blue eyes are safe though :)

Well this list is considerably longer than I anticipated. What was I just saying about the having less stuff theory??! Oops. I can say that we didn't have all of these items at once! The things he has grown out of are either stored or given to a friend already. Makes me a feel a little better! I'll be curious to see which of these stands up as a favorites for an future kids too. And no, that is not an announcement! It would be so out of character for me to just throw something like that in a post like this. When at some point in the future we grow our family again, you can count on me coming up with some sort of themed photo shoot over it! :)

P.S. I'm not paid or perked or compensated in any form or fashion here! My only reward is the sweet comments I receive from you! Thank you for following and feel free to add any items that you loved!

DIY Crib Mobile

I think this should wrap up all the details on Luke's room! I picked up these mushroom ornaments from Target during their after-Christmas clearance blowout last year. Well, two years ago now (2011)! I knew we would be trying for kiddos soon and I thought they might come in handy! At the time I was totally obsessed with the woodland themed nursery style, and the colors were perfect for a boy or girl. Fast forward nine months and I didn't go with the woodland theme but the colors still fit into Luke's room.

Gather:
5+ cutesy things to hang
Embroidery hoop
Fishing line
Ribbon
String
Hot glue gun
Needle

Not a super scientific list, but I had stashed a few odds & ends that I thought might be useful for this project. First I wrapped the embroidery hoop with ribbon (the hemp ribbon was actually the tie that kept the area rug in Luke's room rolled up!) and secured the ends with hot glue. Next I used the white and red string (which was from the packaging of Luke's baby quilt!) to make a grid shape inside the hoop for hanging the mushroom ornaments. And finally, I cut several lengths of fishing line and played around with the arrangement til I found one I liked best! To attach the fishing line to the ornaments, I fed it through a needle and stitched right through the top of the stuffed mushroom cap.

I also used fishing line to hang the mobile from the ceiling. Cody screwed an eye hook into the sheetrock for the line to hang off of. The trickiest part was getting the hoop to hang evenly, we wrapped four strings of fishing line at 'four corners' of the circle (yes I know circles don't have corners!) and tied a knot further up towards the ceiling. I think it may be a tad low, so we will make some adjustments when Luke gets strong enough to stand up. Which, scarily, seems like its not so far off!

Maternity Style: Dressing the Bump

I completely fell off the wagon on documenting outfits during my pregnancy. Such a missed opportunity, I know! I was pretty tired throughout my pregnancy so its just the way it goes. I've sorted through photos though and came out with some examples on how I kept my wardrobe affordable with an ever changing and growing tummy. I wore a lot of maxi dresses and sandals, so if I am ever pregnant again through the winter this list will change quite a bit!

Just to clear the air, I gained nearly double the recommended 25 pounds during my pregnancy. I tell you this because I think a lot of us are/were in that boat (way more than the doctor will admit to!) and I was still able to wear many of my pre-pregnancy clothes. A few things to keep in mind...

-DO NOT pay attention to size labels! During my eighth month of pregnancy I wore two dresses, both non-maternity, one was a size small the other a size 14. Go figure. Don't worry about what the tag says, just wear what fits!!

-Empire waist is king (--or should I say Queen?)

-Hand-me-downs are a huge resource, I purchased several pairs of gently used work slacks on Ebay.

-Leggings are crucial, a few of my shorter summer dresses became cute tops with the bump.

-Other than jeans, work slacks, and a couple of t-shirts nearly all of my clothing during pregnancy was not maternity wear.

-I gave up trying to keep up with my bra size, your rib cage changes shape too so I used low-key (read low spandex content!) sports bras. Nordstrom Rack has a great selection in every color!

-A statement necklace/jewelry is key. Throw some bling on top of that plain stretchy t-shirt and you'll feel like a million bucks! You don't even have to be pregnant to benefit from this one either :)

And now that I'm a momma, my wardrobe decisions are based on whats easiest to wash spit-up off of. More on that some other time!

First Christmas Ornament DIY

I posted this on Facebook a couple weeks ago, but in case you missed it here it is again! We originally wanted to get a hand print of Luke's for his first Christmas ornament, but the little guy likes his fists. So we went with the foot instead. I picked up this plastic squashed circle sort of shape of an ornament at Michael's for $1.49 and all-purpose craft paint by Martha Stewart in gold shimmer. It took a handful of practice foot stamping and we settled on this one!

Once it dried I slipped in our hospital bracelets and shook it all around til they fell in a pretty tangle. Debating adding a little something else to it, I feel like it needs a monogram. But I pretty much think everything needs a monogram so I'm going to sit on that thought and see before I go crazy adding "L" to everything in sight!

Glass ornaments are prettier by far but I had mommy nightmares over future three year old Luke running around the house with his ornament and crashing and cracking his precious footprint ornament. And injuring himself too. But how devastating to potentially lose that footprint! I am prepared for Luke to have lots of boo-boos. I mean he's a boy for one, and he comes from a long line of bruisers on both sides. I am the only one out of my husband & brothers who hasn't had the pleasure of an ambulance ride. It's just in the genes. I'm surrounded by adrenaline junkies!

Maternity & Newborn Photos

I thought it would be fitting to end this year of blogging by (finally) sharing our maternity and newborn photos! Having our son Luke was the major event this year and we are so super pleased with Kandace of Kandace Photography for capturing our excitement! Visit her website & blog here to see more of her special moments and information.

We met for maternity photos in August and took the timing to also celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary! Kandace made the whole shoot so much fun, it was like having our wedding photos done again. Really tempting to just post all of the pictures, here's the 'small batch'...if you would like to see them all, I will gladly have you over for a slide show on our flat screen TV. Seriously, just so in love with them all!

And then we had her over to our home to photograph our little guy at three weeks old! He was supposed to be sleeping for the shoot, but he was a good little newborn and slept all of the night before!! We tried every trick; warm bottle, rocking, heart beat/uterus swooshing sounds...He was set on showing his big blue eyes the whole time. And having his hands in his face. Kandace had no hesitation changing up the agenda and working with our wide eyed guy. And in the end it totally worked out, this is Luke's personality--awake and ready to live it up!

So there you have it! Thanks for hanging in there and getting alllll the way to the end! One more though, can we just take a moment and enjoy this side by side?!

I have no idea if Kandace did this on purpose, but we're going to say she did. I am completely in love with it.
